Music for the Muse
Below is a list of songs that inspired the story of Trapdoor. The links go to the music videos for each song (or they should; sometimes youtube is broken :P).
No other way to describe it except to say that it underscores the feelings behind the novel perfectly.
Youssou N'Dour & Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds
Evokes images of the key parental roles in the novel: Juliette after the birth of her son, and Raven becoming a father to his.
An oft-referenced song throughout the novel, particularly the line, “I’ve been contemplating suicide”.
The title of this song was also used as the title of one of the book’s chapters. Very much about Raven.
For the moments when love crosses the line into obsession. Also referenced during the novel.
For a feeling of what happens to Raven and Pegasus after the end of the story.
Suzanne Vega - Blood Makes Noise
Also used as a chapter title in the book. A glimpse into what goes on inside Pegasus’s head much of the time.
Perfect enough for Raven’s moments of darker insight (and the author’s as well).
The wish that lies within the heart of the story, and in the love between Raven and Pegasus.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Mercy Seat
A ‘Raven in a mood to embrace Death’™ song.
Begins to evoke those feelings that come over the characters, especially Raven, towards the end of the book.
Frente! - Bizarre Love Triangle
Both this version, and the original by New Order, are songs for Pegasus.
