Trapdoor
a dark m/m love story by Vixen Phillips
Below is a list of songs that inspired the story of Trapdoor. The links go to the music videos for each song (or they should; if you run into troubles, try searching for an alternative version). All links are hosted at youtube.
No other way to describe it except to say that it underscores the feelings behind the novel perfectly.
Youssou N'Dour & Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds
Evokes images of the key parental roles in the novel: Juliette after the birth of her son, and Raven becoming a father to his.
An oft-referenced song throughout the novel, particularly the line, “I’ve been contemplating suicide”.
The title of this song was also used as the title of one of the book’s chapters. Very much about Raven.
For the moments when love crosses the line into obsession. Also referenced during the novel.
For a feeling of what happens to Raven and Pegasus after the end of the story.
Suzanne Vega - Blood Makes Noise
Also used as a chapter title in the book. A glimpse into what goes on inside Pegasus’s head much of the time.
Perfect enough for Raven’s moments of darker insight (and the author’s as well).
The wish that lies within the heart of the story, and in the love between Raven and Pegasus. Also heard playing on the radio in the novel’s first chapter.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Mercy Seat
A ‘Raven in a mood to embrace Death’™ song.
Begins to evoke those feelings that come over the characters, especially Raven, towards the end of the book.
Frente! - Bizarre Love Triangle
Both this version, and the original by New Order, are songs for Pegasus.
Stone Temple Pilots - Big Empty
A song that plays on the radio in the background of the novel’s first chapter. Also a perfect late-night-in-a-bar-in-90s-Melbourne song.
Queen are Monty’s ‘band of the moment’ during the story. This song in particular is playing in his car in chapter 3.

When I find you again, Pegasus,
I will lay you down on the soft sand by our ocean
and cover your soul with my wings and kisses.
Kisses are feathers. My wings are very strong.
